Painting a Seascape of Two Girls Playing At the Beach - Follow Along with each Step

Back on July 7, 2010 post I described how I was going to use this sketch for a painting. If you want to read that post it is here painting-seascape-step-by-step . So that is my black and white sketch for this seascape painting of two girls playing at the beach.

My next step was to start the background, I am painting with Golden brand of acrylic paint. So I have painted with thin acrylic to get the background in and to cover the canvas. I do not have the figures in yet, I wanted to get the background started before adding the girls.

Here you can see that I am painting on a 12" x 12" gallery wrap canvas. I paint on the 1.5" sides of the canvas wrapping the scene right around the edge and onto the sides. This type of canvas does not need a frame and it will add depth to the painting. Check back to follow along with the next step in this seascape of two girls playing at the beach.

This Friday evening there will be a wine and cheese reception at The Artisans Harbor at 188 Main Street, Old Saybrook, CT. So if you are in the area stop by between 5 - 7pm to see many of my new paintings and hand painted furniture.
Thanks, PJ

Beach Cottage Furniture - Sandpiper Birds Painted on a Sofa Table

I have finished the sofa table, it is painted in a beach cottage furniture style with an off-white crackled finish. The sandpiper birds are running along the beach just like you see them when you are at the beach. My painting is a vignette so the crackled finish shows through the painting at the edges.

The sofa table is 44" long and would be a wonderful addition to any house or cottage with a beach decor theme. This table can be easily shipped as the legs can be removed with one tool. To buy this one of a kind hand painted furniture please email for more info at  info@beachcottageart.com
Create your own beach cottage feel with these unique designs that are sure to bring the beach home to you. My next project will be a corner table with the same off-white crackled finish. I will be posting each stage of the project right here on this blog so check back.
Thanks, PJ Cook

Cottage Furniture With Sandpiper Birds On The Beach

Here is a closeup of one of the sandpiper birds on the beach. I have worked on this bird, adding more of the detail in the feathers and his legs. And don't forget the shadow, it now looks like the sun is shining.
I am trying to keep some of the crackle finish from the table to show through in the painting. It is gradually fading into the painting.
Don't forget to check out my new website of hand painted cottage furniture and beach decor at Beach Cottage Art

Next Step In Painting A Seascape

When you compare the previous post of Painting A Seascape with this one you will notice the addition of more details in the painting. I have added the chairs, the beach cottage and more textures like the rocks and sand. I step back often and look at the painting from a distance to compare values and to see where I can improve the painting. This particular beach in Long Island Sound has sand that has a red/pink color in areas along the shore and I have included that in this painting. Look for similar details in your art work to create more interest.

Handpainted Decorative Bar Stools

I have been painting 2 bar stools that would look great in a nautical or beach decor setting. The photos shown here are from my work table as the tops were drying. On the top surface of the first bar stool is a painting of 2 adirondack chairs on a dock overlooking the water. The bar stool legs are painted to look like driftwood with a whitewash wood grain effect. I have been using acrylic paint for the scene because it is so durable. I applied a thick clear finish on the top surface of the stool so it is extremely durable and it looks great with the thick glossy finish.

My painting on the second bar stool is of a beach path with roses. The sky and sea are a bright pretty blue. There is an inviting beach chair on the beach.

These sturdy wood stools are 30" tall and would make a great addition to any beach cottage decor. I will be painting more bar stools with new scenes to go with these first two. Please contact me for more info on the bar stools or for purchasing information .
